“Instead, copyright law needs to focus on professional work being copied without being remixed…Amateurs making remixes need to have free use, not fair use; they need to be exempted from the law of copyright.” (165)

Comment:

I completely disagree with this statement. Copyright law either needs to focus on work from everyone, not only “professional work” or shouldn’t be a law at all. Nowadays, on social media, anyone can get famous for the simplest things. Amateurs who are not professionals and who are just having on media platforms are still able to get famous, and if they get famous off of other people’s ideas, that is not fair at all. TikTok and Instagrams are two huge platforms where “regular” people can easily get famous without being a celebrity or professional. People can post an Instagram reel or a TikTok video and get millions of views easily, but so many of those people who get views and followers completely copied ideas from another creator who didn’t get as much recognition. There are no laws against people doing this, but professionals can get sued for stealing ideas, so I believe that we should either get rid of copyright laws in general or apply them to everyone. The only platform that does well in taking down videos that were copyrighted no matter who posted is YouTube. Videos re-uploaded by people who don’t credit the original creator are quickly taken down by YouTube, where that is reposting a video already made by a YouTube creator or if there’s music in the video made by a different artist. YouTube’s rules in copyrights should be used on all platforms or not applied to YouTube. It is unfair that people on TikTok can make profit off of other people’s ideas, creations, and posts. If creators are scared of getting copied, they can also put a watermark/copyright filter on their picture or video, but sometimes the watermark can get in the way of the content. To conclude, copyright laws should be the same on all platforms.

Question:

Should social media use copyright laws or is not necessary?
